It’s been awhile since my last post. Sorry for the absence. Here’s some pictures of what you should have been doing this weekend…….
As you can see, great weather to run some HF. This was a quick field expedient set-up. Radio, tuner and longwire in a tree. Nothing fancy here. It worked well, contacts made and mission complete. Cold weather should not stop you from field work. Bad things can and will happen in the most inconvenient times. Be ready.
Dialtone OUT.
Looks exactly like my setup with a random wire on Friday. Great tuner IMO.

Are you limited with wattage on those portable tuners? Always wondered what the functional difference between those and a regular versa tuner would be.
Also, any word on classes for spring 2016? Happy Thanksgiving all!

The tuner does have a lower wattage range. With that said, it is more accurate at lower wattage. A regular tuner has a hard time reading at low power levels. As a side note, you can move a jumper in the tuner to set it to the 100 watt range.

So sounds like for CW or digital modes of 25-30 watts, that tuner would actually be preferred. Very interesting. Thanks for the idea!

Looks like my FT-817 field rig, except I use the Elecraft T1 tuner. Running on the internal batteries of the rig and the T1, an entire expedient station fits in a small bag about 14″ x 10″ x 6″. To extend run time, I add a second similar package that includes a 15W fold up solar panel and a small dc-dc converter to keep the output no higher than 12 V.
